Living in the Power of the Cross
A sermon by Pastor Eddie Lawrence from Grace House Church in Florence, Alabama.
Scripture reference: Hebrews 9:13–14
Many Christians find themselves trapped in a cycle of spiritual performance, feeling like they must earn their way back into God's presence after every failure. This exhausting treadmill is not what Scripture teaches. The finished work of Jesus on the cross is not simply the starting point of faith. It is the unshakable foundation upon which every believer is meant to build their entire life. His one sacrifice was final, perfect, and never to be repeated, and it accomplished far more than most believers have learned to walk in.
The cross accomplished four profound realities for every believer. First, you were purchased at the highest possible price, the precious blood of Christ, meaning your salvation is already fully paid for. Second, you were pardoned completely, not released on bail but declared not guilty, with Jesus bearing God's wrath in your place. This pardoning brings freedom from the penalty of sin through justification, freedom from the power of sin through sanctification, and the future freedom from the presence of sin through glorification. Third, your conscience has been purged and cleansed so thoroughly that you no longer need to live under constant guilt and condemnation. When you fall short, the response is simple: agree with God, receive His forgiveness, and step back into the light without days of spiritual penance. Fourth, you have been positioned as a child of God with bold, confident access to the Father, not because of your performance, but because of His blood.
Living by grace means getting off the performance treadmill and trusting what Jesus has already accomplished. Misplaced focus on sin, on the enemy, or on your own moral effort will quietly derail your faith. Instead, the call is to magnify the promises of God, fix your eyes on Jesus, and walk in the good works He has already prepared for you. The faith that saved you is the same faith that sustains you. God is not waiting for you to do enough. He is waiting for you to trust what His Son has already done.
