Sermon series: The Perfections of Christ
Many believers live on a kind of spiritual treadmill, feeling close to God when life is going well and distant from Him when they fall short. This performance-based approach to faith is not only exhausting but also contradicts what Scripture clearly teaches. The New Testament, particularly the Book of Hebrews, makes a bold and liberating claim: your standing before God does not rest on your daily record. It rests permanently on the finished work of Jesus Christ, the one perfect sacrifice who accomplished what no Old Testament priest ever could.
The Levitical sacrificial system was never designed to take away sin permanently. Those priests stood and offered the same sacrifices repeatedly, day after day, in an endless cycle that could never fully resolve the problem of human sin. Jesus, however, came as a High Priest unlike any other. He was holy, sinless, and undefiled, meaning He needed no sacrifice for Himself before offering one for others. He offered Himself once, entered the Most Holy Place with His own blood, and obtained eternal redemption. When He declared that it was finished, He meant it completely. He then sat down at the right hand of the Father, something no Levitical priest ever did, because their work was never done. His was.
Hebrews 10:14 captures this beautifully by holding two realities together at once. Christ has perfected forever those who are being sanctified. Your position before God is already settled, declared righteous through the offering of His Son. At the same time, the Holy Spirit is actively at work within you, shaping you into the likeness of Christ. These are not competing truths. They work together. You are not striving to earn a standing you do not yet have. You already have it, and from that secure place, transformation happens. Every Old Testament offering, from the burnt offering to the trespass offering, was a shadow pointing toward Jesus as the substance. He fulfilled them all. Your part is simply to believe it, receive it, and let that truth do its deep and lasting work in you.
