The first Passover in Exodus 12 provides one of the most vivid Old Testament pictures of Christ's redemptive work. After 400 years of slavery in Egypt, God delivered His people through a series of plagues that demonstrated His power over pagan gods. The final judgment involved the death of the firstborn, but God provided protection through the blood of an unblemished lamb applied to doorposts. Paul connects this directly to Christ in 1 Corinthians 5:7, declaring that Christ our Passover was sacrificed for us. Five essential principles emerge from this account that apply to believers today. The principle of separation shows how the Passover lamb was set apart, just as believers are called out from the world to live sanctified lives as lights in darkness. The principle of substitution reveals that either the lamb dies or the firstborn dies—a beautiful picture of Jesus taking our place and bearing the punishment we deserved. The principle of application demonstrates that blood in the basin wasn't enough; it had to be applied to the doorpost, just as knowing about Jesus isn't sufficient without personal faith and confession.The principles of restoration and protection complete the picture. After applying the blood, the Israelites ate the lamb and prepared for their journey to the promised land, leaving Egypt with wealth and strength. Similarly, believers must dive deep into God's Word to discover their identity in Christ. The death angel passed over every house marked with blood, providing divine protection that believers can claim today by pleading the blood of Jesus over their families and homes. This isn't just historical fact but present reality with power to transform, protect, and restore every area of life.
