The Emotion Quotient

Breaking Free From Emotional Extremes

A sermon by Pastor Eddie Lawrence from Grace House Church in Florence, Alabama.

Scripture reference: 2 Corinthians 5:7

Emotions are woven into the fabric of what it means to be human, and God never intended for us to ignore or suppress them. The emotion quotient refers to a person's ability to recognize, understand, manage, and safely express their own emotions while also empathizing with others. As believers, we are called to steward our emotions well, walking by faith rather than feelings and by the Spirit rather than the flesh. The fruit of the Spirit, particularly self-control, is not about the fallen self trying harder. It is the Holy Spirit leading from within, granting the inner mastery needed to express emotions properly and purposefully.

Jesus is the perfect model of emotional health. He wept at the tomb of Lazarus, rejoiced in the Spirit when the kingdom advanced, responded with righteous indignation in the temple, and was known as someone people genuinely enjoyed being around. He never compromised holiness, yet He expressed a full range of human emotion, always surrendered to the Father. Because we are made in His image, our emotions are not a flaw. They are part of how God designed us. However, when emotions are not submitted to the Holy Spirit, they can suffocate faith, hijack the imagination with fear-based thinking, blur our judgment, and lead to words that cause lasting damage.

Four practical steps can help us respond with wisdom rather than reaction. First, honestly acknowledge what you are feeling and bring it before God. Second, weigh your emotions against Scripture and ask how Jesus would respond. Third, yield the emotion to the Holy Spirit and ask Him to lead you through it. Fourth, reframe your response in light of God's will, choosing faith over fear and blessing over anger. You are a spirit, you have a soul, and you live in a body. When the Holy Spirit is in charge of your inner life, your emotions become a powerful tool for His glory rather than a source of destruction.
