A Holy Habit
A message by Pastor Eddie Lawrence from Grace House Church in Florence, Alabama.
Building a daily devotional life is one of the most transformative habits a believer can develop, and it does not require hours of free time or a theology degree. Rooted in the example of Jesus Himself, who rose early and withdrew to a solitary place to pray even after a full evening of healing and ministry, this practice is structured around three simple movements: the inward look, the upward look, and the outward look. Together, these movements create a rhythm that anchors your soul before the demands of the day take hold.
The inward look is about stillness. Before reaching for your phone or stepping into the noise of the day, take a few minutes to quiet your heart and acknowledge God's presence. Remind yourself that you are unconditionally loved, fully accepted, and fully forgiven. Let thanksgiving flow naturally from that place of security. The upward look follows, and it centers on Scripture. Using a simple framework of read, reflect, and respond, you engage with even a small passage of the Bible slowly and intentionally, allowing the Holy Spirit to illuminate what He wants you to see and then turning that insight into prayer. This is how God's Word moves from information to transformation.
The outward look is the final movement, where you rise and step into the day with intention. Before the first meeting, the first conversation, or the first challenge, you mentally walk through what lies ahead and commit all of it to God. Declaring Scripture promises out loud over your day is not just an encouraging exercise. It is a spiritual act that sets the tone for everything that follows. Like an airplane climbing above a storm, a consistent devotional life does not make the trials disappear, but it changes your perspective on them entirely. Even ten minutes each morning, practiced with sincerity and consistency, can begin to reshape you from the inside out.
