Knowing God by His Word, His Works & His Ways

A sermon by Pastor Eddie Lawrence at Grace House Church in Florence, Alabama.

Scripture reference: Psalm 103:7

Knowing God is one of the most important pursuits a person can undertake, and it is available to everyone, not just those in ministry or with years of theological training. There are three foundational ways this knowledge grows: through His Word, through His works, and through His ways. The Bible is not simply a religious text. It is God-breathed, living, and powerful. Just as Martin Luther's encounter with Scripture sparked one of the greatest movements in church history, anchoring our lives in the Word produces real and lasting transformation. Faith is not a feeling. It is built by consistently hearing and receiving what God has already spoken.

Beyond the Word, God reveals Himself through what He does. Jesus pointed to His own works as evidence of who He was, and figures like Smith Wigglesworth demonstrated what happens when someone moves in bold, Word-grounded faith. But miracles are signposts, not the destination. Every work of God is meant to draw us closer to God Himself, not simply to satisfy our desire to see something happen. The deepest level of knowing God comes through learning His ways, which requires time in His presence. E.M. Bounds rose at 4 a.m. daily to pray, and the revival that followed was not the result of better programs but of people who had learned to do things God's way. Knowing God is a lifelong journey, and it is the most worthwhile pursuit of your life.
