Jesus made His mission clear: He did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many. That single truth redefines what success looks like for a follower of Christ. While the world measures greatness by how many people serve you, Jesus measures it by how many people you serve. And the motivation behind that service is not duty or obligation. It is love. The love of Christ compels us to stop living for ourselves and start living for others, because He gave everything for us first.
This kind of love cannot be manufactured on our own. Agape love, the unconditional and sacrificial love that can move through hostility and still choose kindness, only comes from a genuine encounter with Jesus. What is in the well comes up in the bucket. When life puts pressure on us, what comes out reveals what is truly inside. The goal is that when we are squeezed, Jesus comes out. Every believer has received a gift of grace from God, and there is a stewardship involved in what we do with it. Pride, bitterness, and judgment restrict that flow, while humility and openness keep grace moving through us and out to the people around us.
Serving with love also means seeing people, not just tasks. It is possible to serve without love, going through the motions while missing the person entirely. But Jesus calls us to something deeper. When we serve others, we are serving Him. Stories of simple acts of kindness, a smile in a parking lot, a bottle of water and a quiet word during worship, remind us that we never know what God can do through a moment of genuine love. Every person who does not yet know Jesus is simply pre-saved. We may be the very person God uses to crack something open in their heart.
