Why We Need Daddy
Podcast message by Pastor Doc Shell from Grace House Church in Florence, Alabama.
Fatherhood is under attack in our culture, but Scripture has always been clear about why it matters and what God calls fathers to be. Of all the names God could have chosen for Himself, He chose Father, and that choice was not accidental. It reveals the design and dignity He placed in fatherhood from the very beginning. Just as the Father spoke over Jesus at His baptism and gave Him His identity, earthly fathers are designed to do the same for their children. A father's voice, presence, and love shape who a child believes they are, and that shaping has consequences that ripple across generations.
The Bible outlines three core responsibilities for fathers. The first is spiritual leadership. Joshua declared without hesitation that his household would serve the Lord, and Paul called fathers to raise their children in the training and instruction of God. The second responsibility is modeling the love of God, not through dominance but through selfless, visible, sacrificial love. The third is providing and protecting the family, which includes more than financial provision. It means planting your feet and refusing to let the culture, the media, or the spirit of the age walk through your front door unchallenged.
Scripture also gives us four powerful portraits of what faithful fatherhood looks like. Jairus humbled himself before Jesus on behalf of his daughter. The father in Mark 9 came to Jesus with honest, imperfect faith and received a miracle. The nobleman in John 4 took God at His word and walked home in faith. And the father of the prodigal son ran toward his returning child, taking on public shame so his son would not have to face it alone. These portraits point to the heart of God and to the kind of fathers He is calling men to be today. The wall in many families has been torn down, but God is raising up fathers who will rebuild it, one home at a time.
