The Double Drama Dilemma

Life will bring drama and difficulty. That is not a question of if, but when. James 1:2-4 challenges us to count it all joy when trials come, because the testing of our faith produces patience, and patience produces wholeness. The word 'count' is a bookkeeping term, meaning we decide ahead of time how we will respond. Before the trial even arrives, we settle it in our hearts. That is not denial. That is faith.

How we respond to problems determines whether we walk through them or create even bigger ones. Every reaction is a seed, and seeds of anger, bitterness, or frustration grow into larger harvests of the same. Faith must lead our decisions rather than emotions, because while feelings are real and valid, they make terrible leaders. Jesus Himself was full of emotion, but He was never ruled by it. He was led by the Spirit, and that is the model for us. Bitterness is especially dangerous because it deceives us into thinking it protects us, when in reality it quietly destroys relationships and disconnects people from God and His community.

The good news is that God does not waste what we go through. When Jesus told Peter that Satan desired to sift him like wheat, He did not promise to remove the trial. He prayed that Peter's faith would hold, and on the other side of that failure, Peter became someone who could strengthen others walking the same road. God will take the very area the enemy tried to use to destroy you and turn it into a testimony. The place of your greatest failure can become the place of your greatest ministry, if you will let patience do its perfect work and trust in the goodness of God.
