When God Meets You in Your Darkest Place

A blog from Grace House Church in Florence, Alabama, exploring lessons from Jacob's dream and how God reveals His presence in our most difficult moments.

The following blog is a summary of a message preached by Pastor Eddie Lawrence.

Sometimes our most difficult moments become the very places where God chooses to reveal Himself. The story of Jacob's dream at Bethel shows us how God can transform our wilderness experiences into encounters that change everything.

What Happens When We Run From Our Problems?

Jacob was a man on the run. After deceiving his father Isaac and stealing his brother Esau's blessing, Jacob found himself fleeing for his life. His name literally meant "heel-grabber" or "supplanter" - he was known as a deceiver, always working angles to get ahead.

The Trouble We Create for Ourselves

Jacob's troubles weren't random misfortunes - they were the direct result of his choices. He had stolen his brother's birthright when Esau was hungry, then conspired with his mother to deceive his blind father and steal the family blessing. Now Esau wanted to kill him, and Jacob had to leave everything behind.

Many of us find ourselves in similar situations. We make poor choices, hurt people we love, and then try to run from the consequences. But as Jacob discovered, running from our problems doesn't make them disappear.

How Does God Find Us in Our Wilderness?

Jacob wasn't looking for God when he stopped for the night outside the city of Luz. He was simply a tired traveler who used a stone for a pillow. But God knew exactly where Jacob was and chose that moment to reveal Himself.

The Dream That Changed Everything

In his dream, Jacob saw a ladder reaching from earth to heaven with angels ascending and descending on it. At the top stood the Lord, who spoke these powerful words:

"'I am the Lord, God of Abraham, your father, and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants... Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go and will bring you back to the land, for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.'" - Genesis 28:13, 15

God's Supernatural Ministry Today

This vision of angels ascending and descending points forward to Jesus Christ. In John 1:51, Jesus told Nathanael: "'Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.'"

As believers today, we have access to this same supernatural ministry. The book of Hebrews reminds us that angels are "ministering spirits sent to minister to those who are heirs of salvation." God still speaks through dreams, visions, and angelic encounters to guide and encourage His people.

What Does It Mean to Recognize God's Presence?

When Jacob woke up, he made a startling declaration: "'Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it... This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.'" - Genesis 28:16-17

Missing God in the Moment

Jacob's response reveals something profound - you can be in the middle of God's activity and not recognize it. How many believers live daily without a conscious awareness that God is with them? We may not "feel" His presence, but His promise remains: "I will never leave you nor forsake you."

Our feelings are unreliable guides. We can't base our faith on how we feel on any given day. God's presence isn't dependent on our awareness of it - He is faithful whether we sense Him or not.

How Should We Respond to God's Revelation?

Jacob's encounter led to a life-changing decision. He made a vow: "'If God will be with me and keep me in this way that I am going... then the Lord shall be my God.'" - Genesis 28:20-21

From Running Away to Running With God

This was Jacob's defining moment. The God of his grandfather Abraham and his father Isaac now became the God of Jacob. He went from running from trouble to running with God.

Jacob demonstrated his commitment in practical ways:

  • He set up a memorial stone and called the place Bethel (house of God)
  • He promised to give a tenth of everything God blessed him with
  • He committed to serve the Lord for the rest of his life

The Tithe as an Expression of Faith

Interestingly, Jacob's promise to tithe came 400 years before Moses included tithing in the law. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob all practiced tithing as an expression of their faith and gratitude. It was their way of acknowledging that every blessing came from God.

What About Our Own Transformation Journey?

Jacob's story didn't end with this encounter. He would continue to struggle with his old nature - there would be more wrestling matches with God, more moments of reverting to his scheming ways. But this night at Bethel marked the beginning of his transformation from Jacob the deceiver to Israel, the one who wrestles with God.

God's Patience in Our Process

God was patient with Jacob's ongoing struggles, just as He is patient with us. We don't become perfect overnight. There are ups and downs, victories and setbacks. But once we commit to running with God instead of running from Him, He continues to work in our lives.

The Cost of Following God's Call

Sometimes following God requires significant sacrifice. People leave successful careers, comfortable situations, and familiar places to obey God's call. Whether God calls you to be a doctor, teacher, business owner, or preacher, the key is being clay in His hands, allowing Him to shape and send you according to His plan.

Life Application

This week, examine your own life honestly. Are you running from trouble you've created? Are you missing God's presence because you're focused on your circumstances rather than His promises?

God may be trying to get your attention through dreams, other people, difficult situations, or His Word. Don't brush aside those moments when He speaks to you. Like Jacob, you may be closer to a life-changing encounter than you realize.

Consider these questions:

  • What troubles are you running from that you need to face with God's help?
  • How can you become more aware of God's presence in your daily life?
  • What commitment is God asking you to make that you've been avoiding?
  • Are you willing to let God transform your "hard place" into a "house of God"?

Remember, the same God who met Jacob in the wilderness is pursuing you today. He knows where you are, what you need, and He has a plan for your life. The question is: will you stop running and start listening?
