Growing Up!
A sermon from Grace House Church in Florence, Alabama, by Pastor Eddie Lawrence. Explore the biblical path to spiritual maturity and how to yield to the Holy Spirit's growth in your life.
Christian maturity is a developmental process that mirrors physical growth, moving through distinct spiritual stages that every believer must navigate. The apostle Paul identifies three types of people: the natural man who has never been born again and cannot understand spiritual truths, the carnal Christian who is saved but still controlled by their old nature, and the spiritual man who has learned to submit to God and yield their life to His direction.
Unlike our instant-gratification culture might suggest, there is no microwave approach to spiritual maturity. Growth requires consistent yielding to the Holy Spirit rather than human willpower or effort. God's pruning process is often misunderstood as punishment, but it's actually His loving way of removing hindrances so we can bear more spiritual fruit. This process can be messy, as we're all works in progress learning to love each other through mistakes and mishaps.
The true measure of Christian maturity is Christlikeness - becoming more like Jesus in character, love, patience, and self-control. While spiritual gifts demonstrate God's power, spiritual fruit reveals Christ's character and must be cultivated through dying to self and walking in the Spirit. Believers should focus on progression rather than perfection, honestly evaluating areas where they need to surrender more fully to God's will and allowing His increase through their decrease.
