The Declaring of Independence
Podcast message by Pastor Eddie Lawrence from Grace House Church in Florence, Alabama.
As America marks 250 years of independence, a deeper question deserves our attention: what kind of independence are we actually celebrating? Freedom from an earthly king is worth honoring, but freedom from God leads only to destruction. True liberty is found when we declare our complete dependence on the Almighty. The spirit of independence from God did not originate with humanity. It began with Lucifer, who lifted himself up against God and was cast down. That same rebellious spirit entered the Garden of Eden and has been working in the hearts of people ever since, pulling them away from God and toward patterns that are contrary to His design.
Three words describe what it looks like to live in genuine dependence on God rather than independence from Him: Inspiration, Influence, and Intercession. Living an inspired life means staying connected to God's Word, which carries His very breath and equips believers for every good work. Allowing God to shape our influence means guarding our minds against the carnal nature, which is described in Scripture as enmity against God, and instead being transformed by the renewing of our minds through truth. Intercession calls us to stand in the gap through prayer, because revival does not begin in the culture; it begins in the prayer closet of a humble and seeking church.
God's promise in 2 Chronicles 7:14 has not changed. If His people will humble themselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from their wicked ways, He will hear, He will forgive, and He will heal. These three promises from the Father stand as a direct answer to the rebellious spirit of independence. The call for every believer this week is simple and practical: open the Word before opening your phone, pray with your family, and stand in the gap for someone who is far from God. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, and blessed is the person and the home that chooses the same.
