Speaking in Tongues

Podcast message by Pastor Eddie Lawrence from Grace House Church in Florence, Alabama.

Speaking in tongues remains one of Christianity's most debated topics, yet Scripture clearly establishes it as a gift for today's believers. Jesus himself declared in Mark 16:17 that speaking in new tongues would be a sign following those who believe in His name. This wasn't merely a suggestion but a promise that believers would speak in languages new to them, different from their natural tongue.

Historical documentation proves this gift didn't cease with the apostles. Early church fathers including Justin Martyr (130-150 AD), Irenaeus of Lyon (130-202 AD), and Tertullian (155-220 AD) all testified to the continuation of spiritual gifts, including tongues, well into the second century. Their writings demonstrate that these supernatural abilities continued to operate as Jesus promised, confirming His word with accompanying signs.

To understand tongues fully, we must grasp God's original design for human communication. Adam and Eve possessed perfect communication abilities - what could be called the Adamic language - allowing them to communicate flawlessly with God, each other, and even the animal kingdom. Sin corrupted this perfect communication, introducing barriers like blame, shame, and fear. At Babel, God further confused human languages to scatter people who opposed His will. However, at Pentecost, God began reversing Babel's effects, enabling disciples to speak in unlearned languages so the Gospel could transcend barriers. Today, speaking in tongues serves similar purposes: direct communication with God, spiritual edification, protection from mental distractions, and restoration of the intimate communication God originally intended.
