As believers in Jesus Christ, we have access to an incredible benefit package that many of us don't fully comprehend. Through the finished work of Jesus, we become joint heirs with Christ, sharing in an inheritance that includes all the nations. This inheritance comes with benefits that God wants us to know about, walk in, and appropriate in our lives.
While Psalm 103 was written under the old covenant, we now have something even better. Hebrews 8:6 tells us that Jesus "has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as he also is mediator of a better covenant which is established on better promises." We shouldn't settle for just the old when we have something better.
Second Corinthians 1:20 declares that "all the promises of God in Him are yes, and in Him are amen." Because we are now in Christ, all the promises are yes for us. We are blessed with believing Abraham, receiving whatever God blessed Abraham with - and this was long before the law existed.
David demonstrates in Psalm 103:1-2 how to command your soul: "Bless the Lord, O my soul and all that is within me. Bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul and forget not all of his benefits."
Sometimes we need to preach ourselves up with praise. This means:
When facing discouragement, consider these three practices:
We must actively remember not to forget what we've already been given. The Holy Spirit's ministry includes bringing things to our remembrance. Start with simple gratitude - thank God for your breath, your heartbeat, and build from there.
Psalm 103:3 declares God "forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases." Notice the word "all" - this is comprehensive coverage.
Forgiveness is Complete
The enemy wants to remind you of your worst moments, but Scripture says ALL your iniquities are forgiven through Christ's blood. This isn't based on your performance but on what Jesus did on the cross.
Healing Comes in Multiple Forms
Verse 4 says God "redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with loving kindness and tender mercies."
Picture the Lord placing a crown on your head - you're marked by God, covered by the blood of Jesus. You have:
Verse 5 promises God "satisfies your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagles."
God is your provider (Jehovah Jireh), your healer (Jehovah Rophe), your shepherd (Jehovah Rohi). Like eagles that go through molting seasons to renew their strength, God renews your inner man even when you're going through difficult seasons.
God's love for you isn't new - He's been loving you for a long time:
This week, practice commanding your soul to bless the Lord, especially when you don't feel like it. Start each day by declaring God's benefits over your life instead of focusing on problems or circumstances. When discouragement comes, remember that the times you most need to praise are often the times you least want to - but that's when faith must override feelings.
Questions for Reflection:
Remember, you have an incredible heavenly Father who is your benefactor, and because of Jesus Christ, you are the beneficiary of His benevolent love. Don't let another day pass without acknowledging and walking in the fullness of your divine benefit package.
